Born in South Africa, Shanell did most of her dance training in Johannesburg at Moving into Dance and later won a scholarship to join the Performing Arts Research and Training Studios (PARTS) in Belgium. She then joined the Vuyani Dance Theatre Project in South Africa, where she collaborated with Gregory Vuyani Maqoma, and won various awards including Most Promising Female Dancer as well as Most Outstanding Female Performer three years in a row. Shanell joined the Akram Khan Dance Company in 2002, and has performed in all the major productions of the company since 2001, including MA, Kaash, Related Rocks and bahok.
