Transmission of the Invisible has been praised as a richly textured work that penetrates the collective unconscious and digs deep into the senses and intellect. With over three years of research and development by an artistic team from Cambodia and Canada, it pays tribute to the recovery and rebuilding of the arts in Cambodia, after the tragic cultural and human losses during the Khmer Rouge era, including 90% of the artists. In this multi-sensory work of eloquent gestures, mesmerising hues and layered complexity, artistic director Peter Chin explores how the unseen essence of a people contained and distilled in its cultural forms and artistic experiences are passed on, even without words. How their ineffable bonds and human spirit can transcend destruction. It is also about the way strange and seemingly impenetrable parts of a foreign culture can nevertheless connect and resonate within everyone by mysterious routes. In bringing to light what is hidden, Transmission of the Invisible is indeed a work that needs to be seen.

Tribal Crackling Wind is an interdisciplinary performing arts company based in Toronto, led by artistic director Peter Chin. A choreographer, composer, designer, writer, director and performer of dance and music, he creates works that potentially engage all of these disciplines, inspired by the Asian paradigm of “Total Theatre”.  In Transmission of the Invisible, Chin collaborated with Cylla von Tiedemann for video design and Garnet Willis for music.

Transmission of the Invisible was co-produced with the National Arts Centre and Canada Dance Festival and created in partnership with Amrita Performing Arts, Phnom Penh and Harbourfront Centre, Toronto. With additional support from the Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council and Toronto Arts Council.

Tribal Crackling Wind creates events that employ music, theatre, film, video, dance and design to create contemporary rituals and ceremonies where the performers and creators are directly involved in the meaning of the work, aspiring to the proverbial merging of art and life. In this workshop, the company will use movement as a basis for an integrated investigation of their work. For participants with dance and/or movement experience aged 16 and above only.
