“The dancing is brilliant, and the patterns are powerfully compelling” – The New York Times
“A work of beauty so singular” – Le Devoir
Embark on an epic journey, through the breathtaking vision of an émigré artist seeking to reconcile the duality of his world. This is choreographer/dancer Shen Wei’s impassioned response to his ancestral roots as he returns home and navigates the complexities of some of the world’s most mysterious, magnificent cultures, in Tibet, Angkor Wat and China’s Silk Road. Intensely personal yet vastly universal, Re-(I, II, III) invokes the desire to “revisit”, “reconsider”, “renew” and “repair”. Its genesis is inspired by Shen Wei’s own experiences and encounters – from oxygen deficiency on the Tibetan steppes to the convergence of old and new in China during his time as choreographer at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics. Comprising three parts and performed by a stellar ensemble, the work is a stirring visual and aural tapestry.
Shen Wei has been called by The Washington Post “one of the greatest artists of our time”, with a trademark dance vocabulary that is “both deeply traditional and thrillingly new”. The stories are told through his interdisciplinary style, combining dance, theatre, visual arts, architecture and drawing from the rich, diverse traditions of each region. Re-(I, II, III) promises to be an unforgettable re-discovery and re-encountering of these wondrous cultural spheres.

Contemporary Dance Masterclass by Shen Wei Dance Arts
28 Oct, Wed
Rehearsal Studio
7pm (approx 90mins)
This masterclass is taught by Sara Procopio, a founding member of Shen Wei Dance Arts. Class will begin by encouraging the body to arrive to neutral as a preparation for full-out dancing. From a neutral and aligned body, we will investigate movement based upon breath, flow, suspension, center-shifting, bouncing, momentum, spirals and joint rotations through simple exercises and travelling phrases. Exploring movement ideas in relationship to one’s own natural and controlled movement qualities will open the body and mind to new ways of dancing. The class is influenced by Sara’s work with Shen Wei Dance Arts as well as her own movement research.
This master class is only for advanced dance students and dance practitioners. Tickets are at $20 and only available through selection via online registration |
