“An intimate, sincere and funny artistic calling card that sums up why he is who he is and how he is where he is” – The Irish Times
“As he zips across the stage, you can’t take your eyes off him” – The Telegraph
Provocative, poignant and peppered with wry humour, Out of Time is Irish dance artist Colin Dunne’s personal perspective of his contemporary relationship with his traditional dance roots. Dunne deconstructs and strips bare the world of Irish step dancing, interrogating its style, form and culture, and presents a vision that is uniquely his own. This intimate solo work integrates movement, spoken word, sound design and film. In collaboration with sound engineer Fionán de Barra, his virtuoso percussive footwork is digitally processed in real-time to create a haunting soundscape. As Dunne seeks new possibilities to challenge the art form that shaped him, the present comes face-to-face with the past, through fascinating archival footage of Irish step dancers, including himself as a ten-year-old boy just after he had won his first World Championship. Out of Time is a bold and heartfelt homage, yet playful with a touch of rebellion.
Internationally acclaimed in the world of traditional Irish step dance and formerly a principal dancer in Riverdance – The Show, Dunne has forged a new creative path since gaining an MA in Contemporary Dance in 2002. He was nominated for a UK Critics Circle National Dance Award in 2007 (best male: modern dance) for his performance in Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre’s The Bull at The Barbican, London.
