“The relationship between co-existence and conflict, apathy and approach, enforcement and freedom, which the performers like ghosts play out on stage”
- Berliner Morgen Post
Leni-Basso is hailed as one of the most exciting and cutting edge contemporary dance companies under the artistic direction of founder Akiko Kitamura, who has made waves with her fascinating use of multimedia to show the essence of dance beyond the corporeal.
Ghostly Round is a rite: a rite of interactivity between dance and body. Dance simply exists in space, an invisible entity not created but evoked from the space it habits. Dance is not performed but passes momentarily through the body or resides in a body it has taken possession of. The body is scrutinised and sacrificed for dance.
Kitamura, known for her provocative and intellectual concepts, sees dance as the moment the body is possessed by ghosts, drawn in by the circular magnetic field that is Ghostly Round. The space is filled with the pulsing presentiment that dance may be dwelling there. As dance passes through the body's encrustations of choreography, there is a moment of fear followed by metamorphosis, and the body, once purified, feels exulted. Kitamura attempts to search for new possibilities of dance through the motif of circularity derived from the magnetic field.
Elusive, compelling, hypnotic, Ghostly Round premiered at Berlin's In Transit 2005 to rave reviews and has been touring since.
" A perfect balance between dancers, image and sound. "
