"NDT I must be Europe's classiest and most accomplished modern dance company, their trademark being slick, gorgeously lit, gorgeously danced movement with a deep balletic grace and sharp modern angles"
- Telegraph
The world-acclaimed Nederlands Dans Theater I never fails to amaze audiences with its company of phenomenal dancers and repertoire of sublime works by resident choreographers Jirí Kylián and duo Lightfoot-León. The extraordinary partnership of Paul Lightfoot and Sol León is seen in the visually stunning and beautifully moving Silent Screen. A panoramic landscape and the hypnotic music of Philip Glass draw you in as performance and film seamlessly become one. Sea and sky dissolve into nothingness. Dancers are rapt in conversation, speaking in an eloquent dance language that is emotionally charged with poignancy and introspection. From meditative stillness to manic urgency, life's passages ebb and flow in the fluid and intricate choreographic phrasing of Lightfoot-León. Pondering the game of chance that life metes out is Kylián's Toss of a Dice. With Susumu Shingu's scissor-sharp sculpture looming ominously above, twelve sinuous dancers negotiate the edge of the unknown with delicate precision in a striking performance. Kylián's exquisite choreography in his signature aesthetic is chillingly heightened by the quietly suspenseful sound score by Dirk Haubrich. A voice heard softly reciting excerpts from Mallarmé's poem Un coup de dés jamais n'abolira le hasard (A toss of the dice will not abolish chance) echoes the philosophical theme of the work in a symbiosis of the aural and visual. This captivating double bill from the masters of dance will take your breath away.
