"Members of this astonishingly versatile
Brazilian troupe are trained to pirouette as expertly as they can samba
or shimmy, and the steps seem to pour out of their sleek, supple limbs
with unstoppable force." – The Guardian
Ritualistic, kinetic, a landscape of scorching beauty…
Carnal, playful, a night of yearning and love….
In this double bill of Parabelo and Lecuona two different worlds await to be
entered but both feature the unmistakable style of Brazil's most successful
dance company, Grupo Corpo, and the inimitable choreography of Rodrigo
Pederneiras, which has been described as "adventurous" and "exhilarating" as
it archives the feat of combining the pliancy of modern dance and the
rhythmic complexity of Brazilian moves with ballet.
Parabelo brings you to the wild and enigmatic interior of Minas
and Bahia, where the swirling colours of the earth and the primal
silhouettes of the wildlife inspire the vivid imagery of this
work. With an original soundtrack that echoes with the rhythms of traditional Brazilian
music and dance such as the baião and xaxado, the sounds of haunting
vocals, working and devotional chants, Parabelo oozes a languid and
dreamy aura, while radiating power and brightness.
Stories of torrid passion, ill-fated jealousy and playful romance
are told in Lecuona through a series of intimate duets set to
the achingly beautiful music of one of the greatest Cuban composers,
Ernesto Lecuona (1895-1963) who was dubbed the "Cuban Gershwin".
Couples entwined express their love with longing, brutality, sensuality
and vengeance, in a choreography tinged with dark humour and whimsy,
culminating in a finale that takes you back to a dazzling ballroom
of a bygone era. But this is ballroom dancing like you have never
seen before. Lecuona is "so spectacular that one leaves the
theatre in a state of bliss".
