Aspirations features five dance works by five
established and new choreographers. Singapore's Cultural Medallion recipient Lim Fei Shen
presents Tyranny of Beauty, a piece that examines the seemingly inescapable
physical suffering of a woman while Young Artist Award recipient Jamaludin
Jalil's S.W.A.N.S. is a light-hearted piece on a serious topic; exploring
the price of conformity and identity.
Inspired by Heitor Villa Lobos' Bachianas Brasileiras No 5, fellow
faculty member Gillian Tan's Voices Within explores the suppressed
emotions that confine us. Two notable and well-received works by
NAFA's alumni, Silkworm by Judy Ren Yi and Qing Guo Qing Chen by Yin
Hao, present fresh perspectives by these two up and coming young choreographers.
Performed by students of NAFA's diploma dance programme, Aspirations
showcases the diversity, creativity and versatility that are at the
core of its curriculum. Through rigorous training in technique and performance,
in modern dance, ballet, Chinese classical, Southeast Asian and South
Asian dance, framed by sound theoretical modules, NAFA develops dance artists
equipped to enter the competitive dance world and make a mark with
their boundless talent.
