Be a part of the creative process as artists bring
their ideas to fruition. This showcase gives you a first peek into the
work-in-progress of a new dance work, The Locusts' Wrath.
Developing The Locusts' Wrath at the da:ns artist residency is
choreographer Angela Liong, who is also the co-founder and artistic
director of The Arts Fission Company, and France-based composer Joyce
Koh. The Locusts' Wrath looks at the extreme global climatic changes
that parallel the condition of the human psyche. The development of
the work draws from literary/cultural sources as well as relevant scientific
research. Recent dramatic natural calamities such as the locust attacks
on African crops, the tsunami disaster, the Merapi volcano eruption
and earthquake in Yogjakarta continue to shed poignancy to the creative
investigation. One of the intentions of this creative process is to
cultivate a new genre of Asian dance theatre that engages audiences
with the dynamic interaction between contemporary dance and music and
a visual narrative through multi-media projections.
The artist residency at da:ns supports the development of new dance
works through the provision of time and space at the Esplanade to enable
artists to germinate ideas, explore collaborations and experiment with
new creative and production techniques. This scheme is part of the Esplanade's
role in engaging with the arts community and contributing to growth
of the arts in Singapore. |
